Don’t Hinder Your Email List – Sign Up Form Best Practices
Nowadays, a nice sized email list is a necessary aspect of any integrated Internet marketing strategy. With sign up forms and opt-in calls to action, your customers are willingly turning of their information to you, which guarantees that you have a highly qualified and engaged email list. This is one of the best, and cost-effective ways to market your business to new and existing customers. However, with any successful email marketing campaign, you must give your customers and prospects a reason to come to you, and to be honest, even with an opt-in list, you can expect up to 33% of your list to dry up every year.
The following tips have been tested and are used daily by professional email marketers. You should use these tips too:
Put a sign up form on your website!
This is definitely the quickest way to boost the size of your list, and should be your first step. In fact, don’t just put it anywhere on your website, make sure that the form can be found in prominent areas, such as the left or top navigation. Or better yet, include it on its own page and have a call to action on all other site pages! Make sure that it is prominent enough to be noticed.
Take advantage of online transactions
If your website does online transactions, make sure that you place a call to action and form on the “thank you” page after a user makes a purchase. Moreover, include a link to this form on the receipt email you send them.
Get your customer’s information in person
This is the most over looked option, but very effective. Simply place a paper sign up form on your counter with a sign. And when people do sign up, make sure you quickly add them to your list and send them a welcome message as soon as possible. The quicker you get them an email, the more satisfied they will be.
Cover all touch points
Again, think both online and offline. Where do your customer interact with your brand? At the register, online shopping cart, registration forms, packaging inserts, etc. Oftentimes, it can take 3 to 5 times seeing the form before they decide to take the plunge and sign up for your list. Persistence is key!
Promote your newsletter
Don’t simply say “sign up for our newsletter,” sell it! Why should they sign up for the newsletter? Will they get special deals, free gifts or downloads? Think about what would make you sign up and then go from there.
Don’t get too greedy
Now, customer information is great, but if you try and get too much information you will turn people off. Oftentimes, less is more with email marketing forms. Don’t ask for too much information or make the experience long and complicated.
Remember, people that opt-in your list are your post responsive customers. Follow the above advice to ensure that your email campaigns are optimized and set for success!
